Is a Trial a Search for the Truth? |
Gerald Uelmen retired last year from a 45 year teaching career as a Professor of Law, first at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, then at Santa Clara University School of Law, where he served as Dean of the Law School from 1986 to 1994. Throughout his teaching career, Professor Uelmen kept one foot in the courtroom. He is most well-known for serving on the defense team for the trial of People v. O.J. Simpson in 1994-95; his account of the trial was published as Lessons From the Trial in 1996. The title of his most recent book, published upon his retirement, was drawn from the phrase he coined for Johnnie Cochran’s closing argument: If It Doesn’t Fit: Lessons From a Life in the Law.
Uelmen has argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and California Supreme Court, serving as pro bono counsel for patients asserting the right to use medical marijuana. Professor Uelmen is accompanied by his wife, Martha, who retired after careers as both a nurse and a lawyer. They have three grown children, and two grandsons. His hobbies include collecting pop-up books and political campaign buttons, and playing polkas and waltzes on the accordion.
AT CONCLUSION OF SPEECH:
Professor Uelmen will have copies of his new book which he will inscribe. The price will be $10 (half of the retail price). |

Co-hosted by MCBA and Legal Aid of Marin
The Annual Awards Luncheon honors our community's outstanding pro bono legal providers of the past year. This year, we celebrate 81 attorneys and 16 community volunteers. Eighteen are recipients of the Wiley W. Manuel Award, issued by the State Bar of California for 50 or more hours of pro bono services.
Award presentations by Hon. Paul M. Haakenson, Presiding Judge Marin County Superior Court and Laurie Joyce, Legal Aid of Marin Pro Bono Network Coordinator.
Featured Keynote Speaker: Attorney J. Timothy Nardell, Nardell Chitsaz & Associates LLP.
Legal Aid of Marin has been serving the community for 59 years. What started as a group of Marin County Bar Association volunteers now has a staff of nine (including three attorneys) serving over 2000 households each year. |
