Judge Terrence Boren retired October 18, 2016. He served on the bench since his appointment by Governor Pete Wilson in 1995.

Before joining the Bench, Judge Boren was an integral member of the trial team that prosecuted one of the most infamous murder cases that touched Marin County: The San Quentin Six trial. Judge Boren went on to lead the DA’s Criminal Division where he remained until his elevation to the bench.

Over the course of his distinguished career he earned his reputation as an intelligent, thoughtful and courteous jurist. Throughout the Court House, Judge Boren is known for his ability to be fair and well balanced with his decisions.

Praise of Judge Boren is easily found. District Attorney Edward Berberian provided these words:

“Judge Boren brought to the bench the same dedication and work ethic he had demonstrated as a prosecutor. Although a prosecutor at the start of his career he knew that his position as a judicial officer required he approach his assignments from a place of neutrality. I appeared before him on a number of occasions and always knew he would be fair to all and be prepared to address any issue likely to arise. You always knew he would have reviewed and studied his case assignments and would be prepared.

As a litigant appearing before him you were always treated with respect. Judge Boren's judicial temperament is what any litigant would want. Everyone appearing before was treated with respect while he still fully controlled his courtroom, not at any time allowing it to turn into a three ring circus which all of us have on occasion witnessed. Our bench is losing one of its finest however his approach to his calling can and will serve as example for others who follow and to emulate. I know my office is sorry to lose him.”

When asked for his thoughts, Marin Public Defender Jose Varela told me:

“Judge Terry Boren wore his judicial robe well. He was gracious to all, clear in his rulings and open to extending sentencing considerations to those who served our country and those making real strides toward a life away from crime. Judge Boren adhered to an important judicial philosophy: The law is the law, but being dignified and respectful as a judge is what truly creates justice.”

Presiding Superior Judge Kelly Simmons offered these words:

“Judge Boren retired from the Bench after serving for 21 years. Judge Boren was a wonderful colleague and friend. He had an amazing ability to show patience even under the most difficult circumstances, a trait that many of us aspire to emulate. Those who appeared before him were always treated with kindness and respect. The citizens of Marin County were very fortunate to have him serve them. We will miss him.”

On behalf of the Marin County Bar Association, it is my privilege to thank Judge Boren for his decades of service to the people of Marin. Best wishes to Judge Boren and his entire family as they enjoy his retirement and new adventures.
