Legal Developments in LGBTQ Employment Law Discrimination

Laws prohibiting sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination have shifted rapidly in recent years. This training will describe the current state of federal and California law protecting LGBTQ workers and workers with HIV/AIDS, and identify practical considerations when advising LGBTQ, especially transgender, clients in these claims.

David Nahmias, Esq.

Law Fellow, Impact Fund

Mr. Nahmias is a Law Fellow at the Impact Fund, where he supports the organization’s ongoing docket of social justice class action and impact litigation, amicus work, attorney trainings on impact litigation, and advocacy. He also manages Impact LGBTQ, which is expanding the community of advocates for low-wage LGBTQ workers in California’s Bay Area and Central Valley through attorney MCLE trainings, Know Your Rights workshops, and litigation. A 2018 graduate of U.C. Berkeley Law, Mr. Nahmias served as a Supervising Editor of the California Law Review and the Editor-in-Chief of the Berkeley Journal of International Law, and interned/externed with the International Human Rights Law Clinic, California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc., Legal Aid at Work, the East Bay Community Law Center, and the chambers of the Hon. Charles R. Breyer (N.D. Cal.). Before law school, Mr. Nahmias worked for five years at Ashoka, a global non-profit organization supporting social entrepreneurship in Washington D.C. and Mexico City as a Fulbright Scholar. He graduated in 2010 magna cum laude from Claremont McKenna College with a degree in International Relations and Spanish. David is admitted to practice law in California.

Lindsay Nako, ESQ.

Director of Litigation and Training, Impact Fund

Ms. Nako graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Highest Honors from University of California, Berkeley (B.A., 2001), and received her law degree from University of California, Berkeley School of Law (J.D., 2005). Before joining the Impact Fund, Ms. Nako was a shareholder at the Oakland-based law firm Lewis, Feinberg, Lee & Jackson, P.C. She also has taught as an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. She is a frequent speaker on class action and employment litigation issues.

Ms. Nako was named a "Top Woman Attorney in Northern California" and "Northern California Rising Star" by Super Lawyers Magazine and San Francisco Magazine each year from 2009 to 2015, and received the East Bay Community Law Center's annual Attorney Award in 2012. She is a Lawyer Representative to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Council, and a member of the National Employment Lawyers Association. Ms. Nako is admitted to practice law in California.
