Cybersecurity: What Estate Planners Should Tell Clients

Speaker
Thomas A. Tietz | Shenkman Law

The MCBA Estate Planning, Trust and Probate & Probate Litigation Sections October Meeting presentation, Cybersecurity: What Estate Planners Should Tell Clients, will be held virtually on Wednesday, October 15th from 12:00 to 1:00 PM via Zoom Webinar.

While professional advisers are all aware of the importance of cybersecurity and related planning for their practices, many clients are not. This is especially so for older clients who are less tech savvy but the focus of many estate planning practices. Client internet and related security could be as important a part of the estate planning discussion as asset protection, excess personal umbrella liability insurance and other common ancillary estate planning topics. All the security measures a professional adviser may have are of little benefit to a client who emails unencrypted non-password protected tax or other confidential documents to their adviser. Many clients use legacy email providers that do not provide current cybersecurity protection. Business owner and professional clients often store sensitive personal information on their business computer systems and use business email for personal estate and financial matters. All these common missteps could prove problematic for clients. This webinar will provide practical, understandable, and actionable guidance that practitioners in all fields can use to help clients address these and related issues. These suggestions will equip advisers, even those with a discomfort dealing with technology, to provide practical direction and issue spotting for their clients.
