U.S. District Court Judge William H. Orrick III: The Continuing Role of Justice in our Federal Court System
Robert Kennedy said that the obligations of lawyers “go far deeper than earning a living as specialists in corporation or tax law. They have a continuing responsibility to uphold the fundamental principles of justice from which the law cannot depart.”

Today, there is an increasing national focus on the role that lawyers and our legal system play in society. At the same time, a segment of our population views the judiciary with suspicion as partisan actors in an increasingly divided country. How has the legal system changed over the last 20 years? And do lawyers and the courts continue to uphold the fundamental principles of justice for all Americans that Robert Kennedy espoused, including for the most vulnerable in our society?

Come join U.S. District Court Judge William H. Orrick III in a candid conversation about these and other legal issues as he offers his insights into today’s justice system. *Please note earlier start time.

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION
Immigration
By Robert Rosborough
Immigration has been front-page news more times than I can count in the last several months, not to mention since the start of the 2016 election cycle. I would like to thank our guest editor this month, Anna Pletcher, for curating a topical immigration-themed issue. The vast majority of the immigration news coverage has been about illegal immigration. Melissa Harms has written an eye-opening article on the Trump administration’s changes to legal immigration.  More >
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
A Mid-Year Report
By Thomas Brown
We have crossed the 50-yard line of 2018 and I wanted to take a few moments to reflect on what we’ve accomplished at the Marin County Bar Association and what we still hope to do this year. In my January message, I reminded you of MCBA’s Mission Statement: “To involve, encourage, and support bar association members, to serve as a liaison to the Marin County Courts, and to educate the community and enhance access to legal services.” One of the ways we advance those goals is through our monthly membership programs.  More >

NONPROFIT PROFILE
Social Justice Collaborative
By Anna Pletcher
In 2012, Gautam Jagannath and Emily Abraham noticed that there were many non-profit organizations helping immigrants with transactional work, such as visas, but litigation was generally left to the private sector. This left a large void in services for low-income non-citizens who needed representation in immigration court and criminal court. Jagannath and Abraham founded Social Justice Collaborative to fill that gap.  More >
