The News About the News |
MCBA kicks off the New Year with a timely topic. In the era of not just 24-hour cable news, but 24-hour Twitter and Facebook feeds and the proliferation of increasingly specialized social media outlets, the news is everywhere. Is it actually news? Spencer Michels of the PBS Newshour will discuss the fragmentation of our public sphere and the universes of alternate facts that have taken the place of objective journalism. What is the future of news? A Marin resident, Michels has been cast in the roles of author, producer, and correspondent over his 40-plus-year career in journalism. Since 1991, he has created hundreds of reports on all manner of issues for the PBS Newshour, winning several Emmys--among other awards--in the process.
Joining Spencer Michels will be Berkeley Law's Executive Director of Public Good Law Center, Ted Mermin, and Facebook's Director of Policy Management, Nell McCarthy. They will be addressing free speech and the regulation and power of social media. The program will allow time for questions on this topic that is--you guessed it--much in the news today.
Moderating the panel will be Alex Vahdat, Keegin Harrison. |

Are You Up for the Challenge? |
Experience a live, hosted adventure from the comfort of your own home!
Getting out and meeting up can be a challenge right now but we know you still want fun and interactive ways to get together with MCBA colleagues. This award-winning virtual escape room creates a unique evening of competitive fun as lawyers become witty sleuths in a Gold Rush era backdrop. Instructions will be given by Virtual Escape Room. There will be five teams. Sign up early as there is limited availability.
This event launches our 2021 MCBA Legal Scholarship Fundraiser which is administered by 10,000 Degrees. In lieu of registration fees, we ask you to consider a donation to the scholarship fund. Last year, we awarded three accomplished and deserving law students with a nexus to Marin. Join us on February 11 at our Installation Celebration to hear from each of them.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATION |
Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity
The Marin Human Rights Commission is sponsoring a free online screening of the film Cracking The Codes: The System of Racial Inequity and will be hosting a special community conversation via Zoom to discuss the film. The Commission invites you to join it by watching the film independently and attending its virtual event.
Cracking The Codes: The System of Racial Inequity features stories that help to paint the picture of how race and racism operate in the U.S. It works to disentangle internal beliefs within and builds skills to recognize and address the external drivers of inequity. The Commission believes it offers us all an opportunity to learn more about the history and system of racial inequity as we work together towards a more equitable Marin.
The film is designed for dialogue and the Commission invites those who watched the film to join in a community conversation. The discussion will be facilitated by Anyania Muse, Equity Director of Marin County, who will be joined by special guest Dr. Shakti Butler, the filmmaker and a racial equity educator.
Individuals should independently view the film online and then join the Commission via Zoom on January 20th at 7pm to discuss the film. More information and registration is at crackingthecodes.marinhumanrights.org. You can also contact cshaw@marincounty.org for more information.
